USA Speedway 11-28, 29, & 30--by Butch Reid

Since my crew chief is now a college student I've had to deal with not having her to help when out of town, so Wed. she flew out to Phoenix to share in the holiday festivities, and get ready for some racing.

So with turkey day behind us we prepped for the trip south to Tucson. Friday we headed there with a couple stops along the way to see friends in Casa Grande,so  we decided to make our gear change while not in a dirt pit area. Thanks Robert Dodge for your help!

With our Ariz. crew having to work on Friday, they would make the trip later in the day.

Bobbie and I unloaded to a full pit area with lots of cars ready to hot lap. Out on the track to pack I realized it was gonna take some time to roll this wet track in, so I pulled back into the pits and stuck Bobbie in the car to go make laps. She was all smiles!

After a couple sessions out on the heavy track we were dialed in so we loaded up ready for Sat. racing.

Sat. pill was not good, 56 mods on hand and we drew 38? Could've been worse I guess.

Anyway, the track was still very wet, from rain earlier in the week I heard, so as much as everyone wanted a dryer track, moisture kept coming up. As the heats got started the track started to come apart, I mean rough race track, holes you could lose a car in! So I sucked all day cause I won't race on rough race tracks, it tears up equipment and it's hard on an ol guy!

I ran in the back of both heats not pushing it at all. In the C main which transferred 6 I ran 8th still not wanting to tear my equipment up, so we loaded up hoping for some track grading to help things far Sunday.

Boy they cut the heck out of the track for todays racing, looking good for some dry slick too.

After the packing/hot lap session I was excited that we now have some race track, so to work we went. In the last chance we had to run 9th to transfer to the C main, we had a good run to finish 5th, car was pretty good just needed more shock control cause the track was still rough in turn 1 &2,for the C we needed to finish top 16 to transfer to the B main, at the green I knew we were good, but I was racing the low groove which was where the holes were in 1&2. Somewhere about lap 10 I was running 9th when the RR spring exited the car, the birdcage mount broke when I hit one of those holes, rotated and spit the spring out, !@#$%^&* darnit! What do you do? Later as we watched the other Mains everyone was breaking parts to the tune of only 13 cars finishing the A out 24 that started. Rough weekend at USA speedway for us all, just wish it could've waited a couple more races to break on my car!

Thanks to Bobbie Jean, Brett & Brian, and Deserae for all your hard work this week. We ran into some more ol friends this week also. Since I grew up in Tucson it's like homecoming when were here, and our new dry slick setup was awesome, can't wait to try it out at Canyon in Feb.09.

Enjoy the pictures Bobbie took of USA's track, you can see how rough it is.

Canyon Raceway Desert Classic -- by Butch Reid

At the last minute I decided there is a race and I need to be there!

So with a few phone calls I had my Arizona crew put together and was in route on a Thursday morning so as to make practice night.

Practice went well but those night race tracks before the big show always seem to change for race day. Friday's racing started out with a decent pill. At the green of the heat I knew we were too tight, had a terrible throttle push on a hammer down track, so we would be running a last chance race to continue on because I went backwards in the heat. In the 1st of two B mains we got the car turning good and made a decent charge forward to start 24th in the A qualifier. The top 8 would lock into the A, second 8 to the B, third 8 to the C, so with that I made a good charge to finish 15th in the A on Friday, which locked me into the b for Saturday.

We were darn good in the b, ran the middle of the track while others were on the top, to pass up to 5th at the finish, that started us 13th so at the green I was pinned on the bottom of the track for a lap or two as the top was the preferred line. Finally on the top I worked my way up to 10th when on a restart the #8 car drove in too hard and took out my left rear, this was about lap 20 of a 30 lapper so we were done, darnit!

These big shows are a lot of fun to go to. I meet friends I've made over the years at different race tracks and we trade stories since we last met. I get to do testing for the Coach's modified so we can improve on our program at home and hopefully learn from these touring pro's we're racing with, and what's the ol saying, a bad day racing is better than any other day!

Thanks to my Arizona crew who worked tirelessly: Brett & Brian, Pete from Flexi-Flyer who let me hang out there all week and dyno shocks and stuff, and to my sis Shelly who always has a bed for her travelling brother.

I'll be staying here all week and going to Tucson next week

Las Cruces and Fall Nationals --by Butch Reid

Friday we unloaded with much enthusiasm for this biggest of the big mod shows in the southwest!

Drawing a good pill on Friday we ran some hot laps in the slop and didn't learn anything, so we lined up for our heat with our HH setup for tacky tracks. At the green I knew we were too tight but not bad otherwise. We raced to a 5th place finish so that put me in a C main for the lack of passing points! We made some changes to free us up and started 3rd row of the C. We took the green and went right to the front taking the lead after a lap. At about lap 13 or so we were taking the white flag when local car 58 came down the track in front of me as I was lapping him. After locking up the brakes to miss him I blew a rear brake line. Trying to continue, I lost one spot in turn one and another in turn 4, finishing 3rd darnit. We had that race won! In the pits we hurriedly changed the brake line and tried to bleed the system to hurry out for the B main. At the green I knew we hadn't got it bled cause she wouldn't stop?! So we raced around in the back not going anywhere for the B main, done for the night.

Saturday, we worked on brakes and setup stuff, drawing another good pill we got some dry slick track this time. Finishing 4th we locked in to the B this time not having to run the C main. Starting 12th we raced hard for 7 or 8 laps till the 3x car spun in front of me. Clipping his bumper with my left front I limped to the wall only to be towed off the track broken!

Replacing EVERY bolt on part on the left front of the car, we readied for Sunday's last chance races.

Wow, another good pill started us in the front of last chance race #1 of 3. We were pretty good for this race with decent forward bite, but the track was rough and I missed that in our shock setup, so I finished 4th when only 8 transferred to the C main. Naking some hail mary  setup changes (you know, nothing to lose), we couldn't touch the track, no forward bite or side bite, so we went backwards racing for 18th? 14 cars transferred to the B main, we were done!

Thanks to Bobbie Jean who worked tirelessly all weekend, Mike Andrews for all his HARD work (before this weekend, and after), Butch Jr for his sponsoring me the entry fee, the fuel fool from Sunoco for the barrel of methanol, and Coach's Chassis for their support of our racing!

Next race for us will be the Desert Classic at Canyon raceway in Phoenix coming up in two weeks. I plan to go early and do some testing for those dry tracks we never see here at home. (yet)

Thanks to all those fans and supporters of mine and Bobbie Jean, see ya at the track!

Hollywood Hills Speedway Recap World of Outlaws (Saturday, 10/12/08) -- by Butch Reid

I have a lot of people to thank for helping out this weekend so I'll start with Sam Hodges of Cardinal Motor Speedway in Eunice, N.M. He, with the help of Brian Prouty of Carlsbad who actually hauled it, brought their track packer up to help prep our track this weekend. Hopefully, since everyone saw the awesome job it did, the tribe will want to own one of their own! My crew, who worked tirelessly with the changes we made all race day trying to keep up with the track; Tom & Ruth Brooks of Coach's Chassis, Bobbie Jean, Mike Andrews, 'chef' James Sundsmo, Mike Walker, Brad Winters & Steven Francis jr., thank you all.

A big pat on the back to the Tom Ball/Robert Shay crew for busting their butt all weekend trying to get the show in. Hopefully everyone can see your efforts!

For the heat race, with a #26 pill draw, I started 2nd row outside of heat one. With the decision to cut the track and rewater, all we did was pack, then heat two packed. Finally heat 3 raced and back to heat 4 and then we lined up again. At the start I jumped behind the 2m car running from the pole to the bottom, the 3 car and 16 went around us both on the outside so to the top I went making the pass on the 2m. On a restart I passed the 3 to finish 2nd in the heat.

For the main we had to redraw for starting position, we drew 67? So I lined up 11th for the A main, out of the 12 who qualified from the heats.

Working the VERY bottom, I moved up a few spots to work on the 131 car for most of the race, battling for 5th spot. Finally I got a good run off turn 4 to pull under/beside him into turn 1 when he came down on me entering the corner. The contact pancaked my right front wheel and seemed to lock us together, both sliding high into turn one by the wall. Then a fire developed under the hood so I proceeded to climb out to the delight of everyone and investigate, pulling the hood. I guess the wheel contact blew a power steering hose which sprayed all over the headers causing the fire. So on the hook we went to the pits. This is the luck we tend to have every time we race with the 131 car, hopefully his "i'm sorry, didn't see you" will be the end of that bad luck for future races! He did come in a lap later broken,so maybe Karma?

Anyway congrats to Jimmy Ray on the win!

I don't think I could have got to him in the remaining 7 laps when the red flag came out for my fire, being a one laner, but I sure would liked to have tried.

Bobbie Jean made her Modified (dirt) debut today and she did great. I'll let her tell you in her own words with her recap! But we're sure proud.

Butch Jr. raced with us also and we all had a good time!

This has been a awesome season for me and sometimes I want to pinch myself to see if it's all real. Thanks again to all our fans and supporters!

If I decide to do any Winter racing I'll post it soon.

Hollywood Hills Speedway Recap World of Outlaws (Saturday, 10/12/08) -- by Bobbie Jean Reid

Well!! This weekend was the most fun I've had in my entire life! As I'm sure it's mentioned in my dad's recap as well- I experienced my very first dirt modified race! Thanks to my wonderful Daddy, I raced the black car which I'm sure you've all seen pictures of as well as heard of! Obviously, I knew I was jumping right onto a learning curve, but I took the challenge. And as challenging as it was, I wouldn't take any of it back! I started scratch in the first heat race and learned quite a few thing (mainly that the car is SUPPOSED to be sideways). This car is definitely different from Mark's street stock that I drove up in Aztec! As my awesome crew including- Crew Chief Mike Andrews, Bad Brad, Mike Walker, Kenny Todd, Coach and Ruth Brooks, Steven Francis and of course my fabulous Daddy- helped me out, I lined up ready to go. Well, I'm sure you'll read about most of it in my dad's recap but the track conditions changed drastically and frequently since the World of Outlaw Sprint cars were present. After some yellow flag laps packing, lined up side by side, they gave us a yellow checkered flag and called the next heat onto the track. Once the track figured out just what they wanted to do, I headed back out and lined up right behind Steven Bertetto. I fell in right behind everyone and tried to learn the line. I didn't spin out!!!! Yay!!! (that was my goal). That was my very first dirt race with my daddy. And, although I didn't get to actually see him cause he's so dern fast... I look forward to the next time. My dad and brother gave me much advice that helped me a lot. Thanks guys :)

I lined up for the b-main because only the top three cars transferred to the A-main from the heat races. I felt really confident out on the track and I was having a blast! I got up to sixth (transfer spot to the A-main) and was lovin' every minute of it! There were some close calls for contact with a few "veterans" but the car stayed untouched for the most part. Still tryin' to get the hang of everything, I spun going into turn three and turned into the infield JUST in front of the other cars.

The yellow flag flew and I lined up in the back. After a few more incidences like that, I finally kept the car under me. I learned a lot but most of all... I had sooo much fun. It was a blast and I really look forward to the next time.

I'd like to thank everybody for coming out and I hope all had as great of a time as I did. Thanks again to the crew, I love and appreciate you all. Most of all- thanks to my daddy for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime. :) hope to see ya'll soon!

Sandia Motor Speedway Recap Hot Pepper 40 (Saturday, 10/04/08) -- by Butch Reid

The annual Hot Pepper 40 is in the books!

And we didn't win, darnit, but some 17 mods showed up to try and take the trophy.

After much work on these two pavement cars since we last raced Sandia, we made great improvements on the Harris but couldn't find a setup for the 63bj car today.

After me having to work at 11,000 feet Friday, and Bobbie having school till 5;30, we made a last minute attempt to make the Friday practice. The #5 had serious issues so we concentrated on the 63 car. First laps were not good as Bobbie spun out in her own oil. Dad must be the culprit 'cause the right side valve cover was pouring oil on the right rear tire. After some time repairing that, the next session went much better with Bobbie logging 15 laps or so at speed. Then with the track calling an end to practice we went to work on the Harris, draining the fuel cell of contaminated methanol, flushing the system, and refilling with clean go juice. The KSE tandem fuel & power steering had been pushing ps fluid into the fuel system. Must be a bad seal or O-ring??????? Anyway, the other issue was/or has been a serious vibration. Well that ended up being the driveline, not the water pump as I had been advised by others. With those items changed and ready, we called it a night and returned Sat. am to continue with more maintenance for the sat races.

Bobbie decided it was my turn to do pill draws. Mistake! I drew 34 for me and 36 for her, which was last for each of us in our heat races. Her turn next time!!!!!!!

Bobbie ran her heat and spent most of it getting adjusted to the pavement after running some dirt. Finishing 6th, I believe, my heat wasn't a lot different as everyone was fast and I had a tight car, But I managed to pass a couple cars to finish 4th.

For the 40 lap main, I lined up 4th row inside behind the 00 car. At the start i followed him through traffic to take over 2nd spot. That didn't last long as we started the main with a new stickier left rear. It grew 2 inches during the race to give me a VERY tight car. After pushing up off the corner for several laps and losing a couple spots, I changed my line by moving up the track to run a higher line. That seemed to work as I ran 4th for a long time til we had a yellow. After the restart, I ran side by side with the #8 car for 10 + laps. He finally got me and I finished 5th!

Congrats to Frank Dutton on the win tonight!

Bobbie seemed to fight a loose car the whole race coming to the checkered in 10th.

As frustrated as we get when we miss the setup we still try and have fun. Heck last week i raced with my son and this week I got to race with my daughter! Life couldn't be any better than that!

Thanks to Wyoming Service Center for there support this year, Action Alignment, Action Hose, and Coach's Chassis, and to those die hard fans, hooray to you all!

The pavement cars are for sale and we do have some interest in them. But starting tomorrow they are being winterized. We're done with that deal for at least this season!

Next week=World of Outlaw weekend. See ya at the Hills!

Hollywood Hills Speedway Recap Dashes and Mains (Saturday, 09/27/08) -- by Butch Reid

A big, big thank you goes out to Richard & Anna Johnson for making this first annual race a huge success and a lot of fun. We all raced hard and to win, but I sure saw a lot of smiles all weekend regardless of how they finished!

The Coach's Chassis modified was on rails tonight, with Tom & Ruth Brooks, Bobbie Jean, Kenny Todd, Mike Walker, MAD Graphic designer/installer Mike Andrews, and 'chef' extraordonare James Sundsmo all bringing it together tonight we clean swept 'em one more time!!!!!!!! YAHOO! Bring out the broom? Why not!

It all started with a football toss to the track officials who each had a pill (eight of them, and eight drivers), and we ended up with #2, so that put us front row outside of the dash. Getting a good start we led every lap to win the dash for cash/line up race (thanks to those who sponsored this race) which paid $125.00.

So that put us on the pole for the main, wow, no pressure here????!

So after watching 2 last chance races and a B main the lineup was set. The crew made some last minute setup changes for the quick drying track hoping we weren't shooting ourselves in the foot, since we race in mud all year.

At the green I knew we were good. I jumped out to the lead being somewhat cautious in my corner entry but blasting down the straits, running the bottom of the track I knew I had a hornets nest on my tail so I had to be smooth and make no mistakes. After multiple cautions we finally got down to around lap 30 when approaching several lap cars running the bottom I had to make a decision (in a hurry by the way) to either hug the bottom and hope for a hole, or take a chance on the high side (which looked good all night, but I hadn't tried it), so I shot high, the 2m pulled under me off turn 4. I went up on the cushion in one and hammered down all the way around the track to finally clear the lapped cars coming down the back stretch to resume the lead I had the whole race. Many people think the 82 helped me win this race by blocking the bottom of the track and holding up the cars chasing me. Sorry, if he hadn't been there, I would have stayed on the bottom where I had been running and the result would have been the same, just not as exciting. So thanks but no thanks to the 82! I didn't need the help, but no one beats me in lapped traffic anyway, so WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!And that race paid a smooth $1,000.

Thanks to the HH crew on putting this show on, Tom Ball, Robert Shay, Paul Wilson, and many others who make it all happen, thank you all.

My son butch jr came to race with us this weekend and brought a lot of his friends who race in Eunice at Cardinal speedway with him. I want to thank all those guys (who didn't all have a great race) for coming and playing with us!

Thanks to our sponsors and fans who REALLY make this worthwhile, we love ya!

See ya at the track next week for the hot pepper 40 @ Sandia

Hollywood Hills Speedway Recap Heats and Mains (Friday, 09/26/08) -- by Butch Reid

The first annual Fall Mod Classic is in the works-35 mods on hand tonight running 5 heats, 2 last chance races, and an A main.

12 cars per passing points and finishing order locked into the front of the A feature tonight, while the remaining cars had to battle it out with 6 transferring out of each last chance race to make a 24 car field in the A, and the top 8 finishers in the A would lock into the front of the A for Sat. night and also be in the trophy dash sat. to determine the starting grid for those 8.

I drew another good pill,#4, can you believe it? Oh wait, there's passing points. Anyway starting on the pole of heat one we led every lap of a very wet and slimy track to win, hooray! Hoping that was enough to take us straight to the A, (it did) we lined up 8th out of the 24. With multiple cautions, we slowly worked our way up to the front to finish 3rd at the checkered. 1st was the 51 car, the 2m was 2nd, us 3rd, 25 4th, 21 5th. It seems like tonight was good for most, seeing smiles everywhere, but a lot of tension among the track personnel. Calm down folks, his is supposed to be fun!

Tommorrow will be interesting as the dash will be VERY important, and the last chance races will be do or die, should be fun.

See ya there!

Aztec Speedway Recap (Friday, 09/19/08) -- by Butch Reid

Great people running this race track. The locals should thank their lucky stars they have such a great place to race managed by great people doing a great job!

Being new to this IMCA track and no point average, we lined up in 4th in the 3rd heat with 5 cars starting. After much packing (by everyone but the sprint cars) we started the heats with about 1 & 1/2 grooves, Taking the green, I moved under the leader off turn two on the first lap as he pushed up off two. Going down the back stretch, he tried moving me down so entering turn three we slid together through the corner side by side until my rr spring came out #$%^& darn it!

I slowed and pulled into the pits to evaluate. No shock on the rr, no spring, and a broken shock mount. Must have broken the bolts holding the mount cause there was no impact (more new car blues). So crew Bobbie Jean & Mike Andrews proceeded to repair and replace to get ready for the main.

With 20 mods on hand, we lined up last in the main. I took a lap to see what I had and proceeded to move forward after I knew I liked it! Racing hard with a lot of three wide racing, we raced up to 5th. With 3 to go, there was a caution. These guys do a Delaware restart where the leader takes the point and second picks high or low and everyone staggers all the way back. The bottom was where I made all my passes but on this start I was put to the outside. I raced hard with these guys but still lost 3 spots before I could get back to the bottom, shucks!

Finishing 8th with a undamaged car can't be all bad after starting 20th.Would have won with the Coach's car though, I'm sure of it.

Other members of our crew on hand this weekend were Andy Andrews and Curtis Berry taking those mystery photos.

Saturday 09/20/08 Recap

After a quick night's sleep and many quarters at the car wash we enjoyed some Aztec cuisine (sorry James) and proceeded to work on tonight's setup and Bobbie Jeans ride (provided by Mark Seifried of Action Hose) for the street stocks.

Mark made some new friends on Fridays race with some paint swapping and one fingered salutes, so we had a few items to deal with (not many) on the stock car. After pulling tires and looking the mod over, we had a lot of NEW car issues to deal with. We finished with the left rear shock unhooked at the top (laying against the fuel cell), the drive line yoke bottoming out into the trans (causing sparks) no wonder we were pulling 3 ft wheelies off the corners,so we spent all day checking/tightening/adjusting so as to be better for Saturday races.

Now with a point average we started 4th again, but in the first heat race of the night. What a slop pit. Taking the green we pulled up and raced with the 25 of Bo Martinez for the top spot settling for 2nd on this one-laner slimy track as the 25 won the heat. For the main we made some significant changes to this black car as the track was actually drying out and going black. I guess I'll never learn my lesson. starting 8th i wrestled with a tight car on this tacky around the bottom fast one lane race track, @#%$$&* (shucks again). Anyway,we came home 11th with about a 10th place car (couldn't quite pass the 10th place car, but almost).

I sure wish i had my Coach's Chassis mod here this weekend. Oh well, we did get some laps on this car finally. The motor is very strong which drove us toward the front on Friday.

After our main was over, we readied for Bobbie's stock car main event. As she did run the heat and was settling in very well to the dirt car by the end of the heat. The streets took to the track and where coming around two by two to take the green, when the skies opened up and flooded the track, sh****t! As luck would have it, they lined up to try and repack when the rains came once more. Bobbie and Mark conferred and decided to call it a night as everyone knew it would be a while before it could be race ready. Everyone was disappointed but there will be others for Bobbie Jean.

So we hung around and bs'd  for hours until finally the stocks got their main in, and then the wing sprints took to the track. WOW is all I can say about the 45x of Johnny Herrera! One of the most entertaining sprint races I've seen, congrats to the 45x on the sweep and collecting the bounty.

Thanks to all our fans and sponsors who support our racing!

Next week: HH 2 day mod special-see ya there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hollywood Hills Speedway 09/13/08 Recap -- by Butch Reid

Wow, last points race of the year in the Late Models & Mods-the team knew it was gonna be a tough and hard fought night (and so did the driver).

Not drawing the best of pills for the late model heat I lined up 2nd row outside in the first L.M. heat, (15 late models checked in tonight). Racing hard from the git go, we battled hard in the wet one-laner for a few laps before I was able to pass the 38 down low and the 69 as well to take the lead and go on to win the heat! YEAH!

As pill draws go we have done well in the modifieds all year, but not tonight. 29 mods checked in with 4 heats and we were lined up last in heat two. From the start, I new it was gonna be a battle. Sherm Barnett in the 82 checked out from the pole and, I proceeded to pass cars who were fighting handling issues, which made things interesting. At the white flag I made it to 2nd but couldn't catch the 82 car.

For the late model main, we decided on no changes as the track usually taks up and stays that way/or moisture comes back up. Well, it went dry in the corners, making for a loose race car with the tacky setup. Starting 10th in the main, I adjusted every thing in the topless cockpit that I could to tighten the car up on entry after a few laps were run. Then the 59 of Bowers was involved in a bad crash causing a red flag as he rolled over but climbed out ok. At this point in the race, I was up to 3rd. It was at lap 11 that the track cut our race to 20 instead of the posted 25 lapper? On the restart, I worked the 96 car pretty hard until I moved into 2nd. Now on the 69 I got under him a couple times but rather than drive through him, as he was sideways off the corners, I came home in 2nd and a damage free race car! Not bad with the loose setup we had!

For the mod main we lined up behind the 2m 5th row inside, at the first green we were moving forward pretty good as a yellow came out after the first lap. Now in 7th on the next restart, I continued forward through a few more cautions to take the lead (after a great battle with the 21 Hodgden car). About lap 10, through many more cautions we led the rest of the way to take the win and the checkered flag! That's five in the last six shows! YEHAW!!!!!!!!!!

So what does all this breakdown to? Two track championships this year at Hollywood Hills Speedway!

This has been a very special year for me.  I realize how hard what we as a team have accomplished. We did it in 2003 at DCR, now again in 2008 at HH. I'm blown away!

Thanks to Tom & Ruth Brooks of Coach's Chassis, to Mike Andrews of MAAD Designs, John Andrews of JGA Engines fame, to Bobbie Jean for her undying support of Dad, James the chef Sundsmo for awesome cuisine at the track, crew members Steven Francis jr (peanut butter cookies from Shelby & Harley & Mom), Mike Walker, Kenny Todd, Bad Brad Winters, and Curtis Berry for catching some surprise moments on camera!

A super job by the Tom Ball/Robert Shay crew (and Paul). Keep up the good work and we'll keep bringing on the shows!

Thanks to Barry Conant/RGSLM president on his work and patience with all of us,and to Mike who helps Barry and does the group's web site.

Thanks to Richard/Anna Johnson for all their hard work keeping the modified division the most popular division at the track, and to Mark McClarren and Lisa for their hard work keeping track of points.

All in all a good year for both divisions, and a great year for the Coach's Chassis/Reid Racing teams.

Stayed tuned as we're headed to Aztec next weekend for two days of it, and two more mod weekends coming up as well. I will be doing a winter racing schedule soon so we'll post that soon.

See ya at the track

A special thank you to my fans who showed up tonight with cookies! They are yummy.

Sandia Motor Speedway Recap (09/08/08) -- by Butch Reid

There's a lot to be said about ring rust, you know, haven't done it for a while so might be a little rusty? That's pretty much the story for the #5 pavement car tonight.

We lined up last in mod heat one and the car was terrible, tight in, and the middle, and loose off *(&^%darn it! Even with that we were all over the cars in our heat and were 4 wide at the checkered flag finishing 4th. With some changes for the main (hopefully in the right direction), we lined up 11th in the main. At the green we took off passing cars headed to the front, car was good in, free in the middle, but tight off with a slight push (until the tires gave up). With that said, we moved up to 3rd trying to reel in the 6 & 7 cars who had a good battle going on for the win. After a 2 to go caution, we restarted 3rd. Going into turn one, the #6 pushed up the track, the #7 went low, the 06 went high. I was set to follow the 7 to the finish down low, but on the last corner with the 06 pushing on the #6 on the out side, and me under these two with an exit push, I had to lift or wreck, so I figured for $200 to win I would take a ring rust 4th place, AND a complete car home!

All in all not a bad finish considering only our third pavement race all year, and we learned some setup stuff for the Oct 4th race (if we decide to run it).

Thanks to Action Alignment for their help, thanks to Wyoming Service Center for their help, and also to the crew tonight, me, Bobbie Jean, Mike Andrews, Steve Waldeck, and others.

Be glad to be back on dirt next week, last point race for the mods & late models at the Hills!

See ya there!

One special note; anyone interested in either of our pavement cars, please let us know, both are for sale!

Sandia Motor Speedway Recap (09/08/08) -- by Bobbie Jean Reid

Well, much like my dad, it's been a few since I was last on asphalt! I must admit that I got a little bit spoiled being on the dirt and being able to get sideways. Back to trying to roll through the corners and keep 'er stickin! After a few hot lap sessions, me and my daddy adjusted the #5 and #63BJ as we thought would do best. I went out for the heat lined up on the second row-inside, behind Race Safro and next to Johnny Dorcas. The green flew and I got stuck behind Race, who got a little squirrely in turns one and two. That let a few cars get by while I tried to sliver back into the groove. One lap later, I was back on the move when Bruce Martin did a backwards slide job and cut me off going into turn one. I braked and settled behind him for most of the race. Dorcas and myself had a pretty close battle. Running behind him, I noticed he was very loose off, as was I. We did our best to keep the cars on the track!! I struggled, being tight in the middle as well but came across the finish line in fourth.

After the heats, me, Daddy, Mike Andrews, Robbie Smith, and Steve Waldeck grouped up to decide what the best touches would be to improve our ill-handling cars. We lined up with what we had and I was on the outside poll, next to Race Safro. When the green light came on, I booked it and took the lead with and EXCELLENT car! I held off Garry Richards but not for long. He and I ALWAYS have some good, close, clean racing! He took the lead and I was right on his tail. A few laps later, my car was gaining some exit issues. Once again, the car was pretty loose. But I threw my dirt experience (Thanks to Mark Seifried!!!) in and drifted through the turns to hold off Charlie Daniels! As much fun as I was having, I certainly hated to see my Oil Pressure Light come on!! Darn it!! I decided to pull off the track and call it good for the night.

We sure gave 'er hell though! Thanks to Action Alignment and the great crew tonight! As mentioned once already-Both of the Reid Racing asphalt Modifieds are for sale. If you're interested, click on the "contact" link on this website to let us know!!

My next race will be back at Aztec Speedway in Mark Seifried's car on September 20th! Hope to see you there!!

Aztec Late Model Shootout Recap (Saturday 08/30/08) - by Bobbie Jean Reid

WOW!!! That's as much as I know how to say about this weekend. Thanks to Mark Seifried, I experienced driving a stock car on the dirt at Aztec Speedway!! With anxiety rushing through me, I was getting ready to go out to pack. Since it rained so heavily on Friday night, the track was simply a SLOP HOLE! I'll tell you right now that having my first encounter with THAT on the track sure intimidated me! I was trying to keep my speed up and stay as high as I could, knowing this was a new world for me. Well, that didn't matter since I got stuck TWICE!! Much appreciation sent to the infield track officials for having patience with me while teaching me how to maneuver in the slime! After cooling down in the infield, I drove straight across the track and to the pits to see my daddy! Man, it was NOT easy getting off that track!

I took my dad's advice and watched the hobbies run around the track for their heats. I learned a lot just spectating. With a little more confidence, I headed to the car to consult Mark (car owner). As he put the final touches on the car, I zipped up my suit and buckled up! "here we go", I thought, "time to have some fun!" and I sure as heck did!! I didn't gain any positions in my dirt debut, but I stayed on the lead lap and gained some speed and confidence! Man, I was ready for more laps!

I got my chance when the A-main lined up, me starting scratch. I finished 7th and had a hell of a time! I battled fairly closely with a few cars and swapped a little bit of paint while I was at it. :)

I'd really like to give a HUGE thanks to Mark Seifried!! He gave me one of the most thrilling and enjoyable experiences of my life! I hope to continue this "career" ha ha! Thanks to my fabulous daddy and Mike Andrews for you support as well!

Aztec Late Model Shootout Recap (Friday 08/29/08) - by Butch Reid

Well for starters the RGSLM bunch from Albq. showed up with great support for this WDRA show: the Coach's 5b, M. Myers #11, C. Frazier #28, M. Herrera #38, R. Williams #06, R. Johnson #26, J. Aragon #69 to help fill the field of 17 cars.

Friday we started 2nd row outside in heat two. After following the 69 for most of a lap we shot low to take the lead and take the heat win. For the main, we were lined up 3rd row inside behind the 11 of Myers. With the track slicked off on the bottom and a cushion on the top, I knew I had to get high as soon as possible. At the green, the pole sitter (#8), coming off of turn two drove it in too hard and spun staying in it and coming back down the track and hitting me in the right door. That spun me around airborne facing traffic! *&^%$#! WOW that was scary. Everyone missed me, though. With the right side pretty damn ugly but rolling under it's own power I resumed the race not sure of the real damage. On the restart, I made the move on the 11 car moving into 2nd, keeping up with the 75b of Jeep Berry was a tall order but I was hanging with em. 10 or so laps into it the car started getting tight making it push. Well the 14 of Dean Moore starting leaning on me as we raced side by side for another 10 laps. All the lappers were running the high side also, so you had to go low to pass. With the car getting tight, I decided to just stay low and raced to a 3rd place finish in the main. After going to the pits, we realized the right rear was almost flat from the 1st lap wreck probably. No wonder it got tight. So with all that, a 3rd place was good!

The Coach's crew was pretty happy but new we had repairs to do for sat.

On hand were Tom & Ruth, Bobbie Jean, Steve Francis jr, Mike Walker, Mike Andrews, Alan Bowers & Wife as the 'A' team!

Aztec Late Model Shootout Recap (Saturday 08/30/08) - by Butch Reid

After a full day of maintenance and repairs from Fridau night's action, we looked forward to sat night's racing action. With much anticipation about the surface with threatening rains, and the dry surface at the end of Friday's race, the Coach's crew was busy preparing for dry racing. At around 5pm, the track elected to flood the track?! Well with much mud packing by the other divisions we had to help roll it in, and it was wet! Expecting heavy heats we stayed with our tacky setup. As I sat in staging watching the 1st late model heat, I also watched the track get blacker and blacker. Oh well, we got what we got! Starting 2nd row outside, I tried to hang on to  what cushion was there. But being way loose, I raced to a 3rd place finish in heat two. NOW we know it's gonna be dry for the main.

Since we race in the mud all year at HH, we made wholesale changes to the car without known results to fall back on. Starting 4th row outside, I knew at the green we hadn't done enough. Loose off with minimal forward bite (oh boy, this is gonna be a long 40 laps). So to the top I went to try and hold on. Racing with the 40 of Davis for most of the race, I got stuck trying to pass the 14 car for the last 10 laps. Even after a couple of failed slide jobs, I finished the caution free, green to checkered 40 lapper in 6th place. Jeep Berry #75b clean swept the weekend taking the win both nights.

Well we know we have some work to do for dry slick tracks, but we do like 'em, so i'm sure we'll get some more practice at it! (it just won't be at HH). A special thanks to Action Alignment for their support this weekend! And also to Mark Seifried of Action Hose, who, after running second Friday night in his stock car, elected to put Bobbie Jean of 63bj fame in it for Saturday Night's races! (what's he thinking?) After much work to make the seat work Bobbie went out to pack? Boy was that a mistake! Too muddy for a first timer on dirt. Anyway, we got past that and she ran her heat race getting her dirt shoes on for the first time, she stayed on the lead lap and didn't spin out! YEAH!

Starting scratch in the main (14th i think), Bobbie got a little racy and with some attrition raced to a 7th place finish in her first dirt race! WHOOPEEEE!

Congrat's to her! So anybody interested in a asphalt mod?

See ya'll at the Hills Sept.13 for out last point races of the season in the mod and late model.

Hollywood Hills 09/23/08 Recap -- by Butch Reid

Hooray for the Coach's late model crew tonight! Win #4 on the season and some new found horsepower!

After finishing 3rd last time out, we discovered a bad msd 6al ignition box was the culprit. So Coach changed that out with some help from Alan Bowers and wow, she was hitting on 8 cyl tonight! I think we've had an issue all season cause the motor seemed flat before, But not anymore.

Twelve cars checked in and were to run two heats. But with rain and several wheel packing sessions, we elected to just run a main event, and it was a good one! I lined up behind the 96 car and at the green started moving forward. About lap 3, I had reached 2nd  and could see the 69 car about a half lap ahead. So 'lettin her eat' I proceeded to chase him down. Making the pass on the outside around lap 16 or so, I took the lead. Oh the lapped traffic, I came up on the 11 & 28 who were battling side by side and was challenged by the 69 on the inside at lap 19 and we made contact causing, him to spin into the infield. Sorry about his bad luck trying stick his nose in on me at corner entry. Back to green flag racing, I led the remaining laps to win the 25 lap feature!!!!!! YYYYYAAAAHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOO!

Crew in attendance were: Tom & Ruth Brooks, Bad Brad, Kenny Todd, Bobbie Jean, James the 'Chef' Sundsmo and Mike Andrews.

Food furnished by the Mark Myers crew. Thanks guys!

Great job by the HH crew tonight doing everything to get the show in,premo!

We're off to Aztec next weekend for the two day late model shootout, so I guess we're giving the modified guys a night off to try and catch us. Good luck!

See ya'll back at the Hills on Sept 13 for the last point race of the season for the mods and late models.

In Memory of ... -- by Butch Reid 08/22/08

To all those racing fans and family who support racing within their family I want to tell a story about someone close to me and my family.

When I decided I wanted to go racing about ten years ago, I started out at Duke City Raceway racing with the locals and having a good ole time. In '96, I bought a new mod and made the decision that to get competitive I would have to hit the road and travel to other tracks and race a lot more than twice a month as per the local schedule. So we traveled to Tularosa on Fri nights, or Carlsbad and Roswell on Saturday nights (when off here at home).

Then one weekend we ventured off to Manzanita and Canyon Raceway. We were hooked on those tracks and since my Sister Shelly lived there we could stay with her and her husband Pat. Pat, as it turned out, was an avid race fan and loved it when we came to town. Any time our crew showed up Pat would fire up the grill and cook up some steaks or some other great meal for all in attendance.

Over the years I have taken many people to Pat & Shelly's grille to go racing with me and he always loved it. Pat never met a stranger, and he always gave me his twist on the races each night (whether I liked it our not).

Pat passed away last week in Phoenix and we were there for the services along with dozens of friends and family members. He will be dearly missed by all, but especially by this racer who looked forward to his smile when the race team showed up to play!

God's speed Patrick Ambrose

Hollywood Hills 08/09/08 Recap -- by Butch Reid

Good night of racing for the Rio Grande Super Late Model bunch, 15 cars on hand, and a fast smooth track to play on!

Our night started out with yours truly drawing a front row pill for heat one. Getting a good jump at the startm I led every lap to win heat #1. Heat two was a good battle between the 11 car and the 96 car, with the 11 making a pass for the win at the checkered to win heat two.

For the main we lined up outside row 5 behind the 11. At the green I knew I had a motor problem because it just wouldn't clear out--seemed like a fuel issue that kept the motor flooding to the point of not wanting to run at all at times. Boy what a long race! Working traffic with half the power I'm used to made the race quite a challenge. As the field raced side by side I was stuck back in the field for over half the main event. With a caution flag, we lined back up single file so I was able to make some moves toward the front. While driving into the corners at warp speed because I had nothing down the straits, I managed to pull up on the 96 who was running 2nd. Now in third I knew I was better but had to use all I had to go forward. Making some contact with the 96 as he checked up for the 06, he went through the infield to give me 2nd place (sorry bout that). I was hoping to hold that spot til the end. One more caution, on this restart (now in second behind the 11 car) I drove er in hard into one and pulled inside of the 11 off of two only to have the motor lay down, @#$%^&* darn it. That was our shot. Well in the remaining laps I couldn't  hold off the charging 96 car with our sour motor, so we finished 3rd. I guess it wasn't too bad bad with the issues I had, but still disappointing when I knew I had the car to win with. Congrat's to Mark Myers for the win. We'll getcha next time!

On hand tonight for the Coach's crew were; Tom & Ruth, Bad Brad, Kenny Todd, Steven Francis Jr., Mike Walker, Bobbie Jean, and a few others that stopped by. Thanks to all for their hard work tonight!

Tonight's racing did tighten up the points battle, and we do have a makeup race added to Sept 20th, which is a points race. So 3 more to try and redeem our bad night and pull off another win.

Bobbie and I will be at the paved track next week so we'll see ya there!

Thanks to all our great sponsors for their support!

Hollywood Hills 08/02/08 Recap -- by Butch Reid

The Coach's Chassis Modified was on rails tonight-get out the BROOM again!

With a full crew tonight to include Tom  & Ruth Brooks, Bobbie Jean (crew chief), Mike Walker, Mike Andrews, Butch Jr. & Ashley (granddaughter). They all kept the primo setup on the hotrod all night long!

After a #15 pill draw we took the lead at the green of mod heat two and won the heat green to checkered going away!

For the main we started 10th, with the running order moved around to run the mods last after the sprint cars we were sure the track would be dry top to bottom. But looking back on history, we (crew) decided to make minimal changes and that was the ticket.

At the green we got off to a good start and at the first caution I was in 6th. Now realizing I had a pretty good hotrod, I hammered down and moved up to challenge the 25 for the lead and made the pass only to have it negated by a yellow, #$%^&(()))! Oh well, back to green we retook the lead right away and was in lapped traffic right away.

After another caution, we got back to green and I proceeded to lap up to 9th place at the checkered flag, YYYEEEHHAAAWW!!!!!!!

Thank you to all the sponsors you see on our sponsor section to the right. We couldn't do it with out them!

Awesome car count tonight (28). We ran a B main, great race track, lots of passing, great crowd, and all awesome fans!

See y'all next week at the Hills for the LATE MODEL show, where we'll see if we can continue the streak!

My grandson Aaron just got out of surgery Friday--his second open heart surgery. He is doing well and hopes to return home by Thursday. Please keep him in your prayers!

Hollywood Hills Speedway Recap 07/19/08 -- by Butch Reid

What a great night of racing at the Hills tonight!

A big hoorah to the track prep crew tonight-awesome racing surface!

Our night started off with Catlin Woosley pulling the #20 pill which put me 2nd row inside of the 3rd mod heat. After light rain and some wheel packing we had a pretty fast track, but slimy. At the green I got a good start and chased the 54 car all the way to the white flag and made the pass off turn 4 to win!

For the main we started 10th and made good progress through a couple yellows with a serious tearoff issue! They all came off at once @##$%^&! What an ordeal trying to race with used tearoffs and a muddy track! Anyway we, battled all the way to the end and made a last lap pass to win the feature!!!!!!!!!!! Yaaaaaaayyyyyyy!!!

Special thanks to the Reid Racing Crew/the Coach's Chassis Crew: Bobbie, Caitlin, Tom & Ruth, Mike Walker and Mike Andrews!

Thanks to all them sponsors for all their help.

A special note out to Coach's Chassis, who busted but this week to repair Bobbie's car, but we found other issues this morning so the 63bj had to sit out tonight.

See ya'll next week for the Late Models & Mods at the Hills

Sandia Motor Speedway Recap 07/12/08 -- by Bobbie Reid

Well, the 63BJ car certainly had the set up tonight and I believe I was the car to beat! The heat I ran included #66 of Joe Byers, number 6 of Charlie Daniels, the #06 of Frank Dutton, the #36 of Dave Radman, the #59 of rookie, Caitlin Shaw, and myself- BobbieJean Reid the #63BJ. This was a fantastic race. My car was almost perfect with the exception of being a little tight in the middle. That didn't slow me down too much as I finished 3rd. I had a fun and clean race with #00. Congrats to Caitlin Shaw as she did very well for her first race in an asphalt modified, finishing 6th right on Garry Richard's bumper!

The main line up was on the board and I started third row, outside- behind Willis Johnson and beside Joe Byers. With Race Safro on the pole and Johnny Dorcas on the front row, the race began. We had two complete restarts due to spins. Thank goodness no real damage was done! After getting back to our second double-file restart, I had a plan down. I followed Willis on the high line for a few laps before getting pushed up the track while racing side by side with Dave Radman. Trying to get my line back, I raced outside lane for another few laps. On apex lap 6, the #59 driven by rookie Caitlin Shaw came to my inside. Assuming this was a rookie incident- Caitlin caught my left rear quarter panel coming out of turn four. This got me a little "squirly" but I attempted to save my sideways car, when I felt another hit. This sent me backwards towards the wall as I was looking at the front of #59 Circle Burner. I thought this wreck was over when I received another hit on the front of my left side door by Caitlin Shaw. Other cars that were involved trying to avoid this accident were Garry Richrards, and Mick Jepson(#7). Thank goodness everybody made it out ok! Mick continued the race as Garry, Caitlin and myself headed to the pits with unraceable cars. I've been a rookie before and am trying to be understanding about what happened with #59. It seems that her reaction to the wreck was out of fear? Possibly she didn't realize her foot was pushing the throttle all the way to the ground when her bumper was already in my door. Once again, nobody was injured except for expected bruises.

I'd like to thank Coach's Chassis, MAD Design, JGA Racing Engines, and Action Alignment for being fantastic supporters for my racing career! Also, thank you to my fabulous Daddy for supplying my with a racecar as well as great support. I had a great crew tonight with Caitie Woosley! She's a great hand and seems to love learning! Thanks, sister!

There is, indeed, an asphalt race this coming weekend. Although there's alot of crash repair that needs to be done to my beauty, I plan on being back out for the fans! If you have any questions, please contact us on this website by clicking on the "contact" on the task bar.

As mentioned above, the #5 Coach's Chassis Modified will be racing at Hollywood Hills. He is curently leading the point standings and we're hoping to defend that title! Come check it out!!!

Sandia Motor Speedway Recap 07/12/08 -- by Butch Reid

After putting the hot setup on both cars we felt like we had a good shot at a one-two finish tonight. Bobbie drew the pills and she was in the first heat, and I was in the second. After practice we mounted up a couple new tires and made a few chassis adjustments to fine tune the cars.

In Bobbie's heat she made a good run to finish 3rd in heat one. For the second heat I also got off to a good start. When at lap two I reached to adjust my brake bias and hit the kill switch while running 3rd. Getting it right back on, I lost one spot but took until the white flag before I retook 3rd place,we'll try not to do that again!

While the uslma was running their 75 lapper, we made the cars ready for our main. At the start of the main the 36 spun. Next restart, the 39 spun and the 66 car spun on the NEXT restart. When will the officials figure out that you can't keep putting these guys back in their spot when they cause a yellow????????????????????

Finally to green flag racing, the pack was bunched up racing side by side and I was racing right behind Bobbie and beside the 59 car being driven by Caitin Shaw. The 59 tagged Bobbie in the quarter panel, and then hit her while she was sideways and stayed on the gas all down her door??????

Well the result was 4 or 5 cars taken out of the race by pure stupidity!

Bobbie was out of the race. I tried to let her finish the race in my car, which was ok according to an undecided official who said yes, but then changed their mind???

Back to green, I passed the 6 car and worked the 31 car trying to pass for 2nd all the way to the checkered flag. The car was too tight on the gas, though. I could get under the 31 but couldn't pull the trigger without driving straight toward the fence@#@^%&(*&)! Darn it! Fire the setup guy.

Anyway it was all I had to finish 3rd in the main, 1st was the 06, second was the 31, me, the 6 and the 7 car after that, which was all I could see at the finish.

Bobbie's car is wounded pretty bad. We'll see how that goes this week as far as repairs.

Thanks to

Wyoming service center, action alignment, coach's chassis, and all those who support our racing, thank you!

Next week i'm back to HH for the mod show.

Hollywood Hills Recap 07/05/08 -- by Butch Reid

Another great night of racing for the Coach's Chassis Late Model team!

The night started off with slight rain making for several wheel packing sessions, but we ended up with a decent track to race on.

Believe it or not, I drew a good pill for the heat race, starting on the pole of heat two and leading every lap to win the second heat.

For the main we lined up 10th, at the green flag going into turn one the 99 car spun and tried the 360 and just about wrecked all of us. On the restart we got some laps in before the 99 wrecked the 72 and 95 taking the 3 of them out!?

Now running 3rd behind the 11 of Myers and 96 of Smithberger, we worked the outside behind these two running side by side for about 10 laps, finally clearing the 96 car I worked the 11 for a couple laps before the checkered flew for a shortened 15 lap feature. I felt like we were cheated out of 10 laps when there was a great battle for the lead with the 11 car when the track shortened the scheduled 25 lapper to 15. Anyway, congratulations go out to Mark Myers and crew on a good job and the win!

At intermission we went into the stands and sailed some frisbees into the crowd and had plenty of them to autograph at the pits afterward.

Crew on hand tonight was Tom and Ruth Brooks,Bad Brad Winters,James Sundsmo,Steven Francis Jr, Bobbie Reid, and Caitie Woosley.

And a special thanks to Shelby and Harley for them peanut butter cookies!

Thanks to all them fans and our sponsors for all your support!

We'll be at Sandia next week so come out and see us!

Recap Sandia Motor Speedway 6/28/08 -- by Butch Reid

They dodged the bullet tonight!

Since our last pavement race (which was won by me on gasoline and only had 3 operational brakes) we have been busy with our dirt program. But I have managed to do some pavement testing.

The testing and experimenting we've done seems to have paid off on the 63bj car! After the first practice session I went out to hot lap with Bobbie. At the green she took off and hid from dad. Toward the end, I slowed down so she could lap me and I could see how good her car was, it was premo!! She was excited and ready to show the boys her new setup, but the winds came and came and came until the track cancelled the show, darnit!

I had some laps as well running the high line just to make it exciting, with some side by side laps with Willis(08 car). Dusting the high line we had some fun, with him on the bottom of the track, cool.

I guess you could say our winning streak has been interrupted (not stopped).

Next week; Late Models at Hollywood Hills as the premier division (no mods or sprints).

See ya at the track!

Thanks again to all our fans and Sponsors who support our racing, with out it Bobbie and i couldn't do what we love and provide a show for YOU!

Hollywood Hills 6/21/08 Recap -- by Butch Reid

Wow! A double clean sweep in the mods and late models!

A special congratulations to T. Ball, R. Shay and crew on a great night for them, the racers and especially the fans! Good job!

For the Reid racing crew and Coach's racing crew it was a perfect night for us winning every race we were in.

Crew-Bobbie Reid, Tom & Ruth Brooks, Bad Brad Winters, Kenny Todd, Mike Andrews, and Steven Francis Jr. Thanks to all.

The heat races started with pill draws for line ups. We were lined up mid pack of the second late model heat with 14 cars on hand and seven in each heat. Off to a good start, I battled with the 96 of Smithberger for the lead before finally taking the win over a faster tougher field than in previous weeks.

In the mod heat we lined up 3rd in the last heat (23 cars on hand) and were trying some more setup stuff which worked out well since we took the lead off turn two of lap one and went on to win the heat.

For the mains we knew being the point leader in each division our starting position would be last in the late models and around 12th in the mods. Sure enough, starting in the back of the late model main we got off to a decent start with cars battling hard for position in the middle of the pack. Althewhile the 38 of Herrera was putting distance on the field, working the faster field of cars I was able to finally clear the pack and move into 3rd. Chasing down the 96 of Smithberger first and not sure who the leader was, I glanced at the leader board and saw the 38 was the leader. Looking for him while in lapped traffic, I spotted him a half lap ahead,so i knew i had to air the Rocket/Hatfield out and let her breathe to catch the 38. So up on the rim, I was able to pass him on the outside at lap 15 and go on to win the caution free main event from the back! What a rush! Thanks to all our sponsors, crew, and fans who support us.

In the mod main sure enough we lined up 12th behind the 54 car. At the start we dodged a couple of near misses as several cars were involved in wrecks. nce we tagged the rear of the 25 car (sorry) when the 32 spun in front of him and he checked and I didn't see it coming and hit him. Glad no damage and he got his spot back. Back to racing, I was picking cars off pretty good following the 25 through the field until it was for the lead between him and I. Working him very hard for much of the race o
